Quasar Used to 'X-ray' a Galaxy Also Produces Vast X-ray Jet
Illustration of how a quasar was used like an X-ray machine to
determine chemical composition of intervening galaxy.

Observations by the Chandra X-ray Observatory of the quasar PKS 1127-145 yielded two important results. First, the X-rays from PKS 1127-145 passed through an intervening galaxy, revealing information about the chemical composition of that intervening galaxy. Second, a jet was observed in the quasar, previously thought to be too young to be very active.
